Invisalign in Mexico: what border clinics charge, and what the trips involve

Tijuana and Los Algodones clinics' own Invisalign prices in US dollars against the US averages, how often the clinics say you come back, what the CDC and the ADA tell travellers, and the aligner brands priced in pesos.

Border clinics publish Invisalign from $2,500 (Invisalign Express) to about $4,500 for a full case, against a US average of $5,108 for clear aligners. Treatment runs on check-ups every 4 to 8 weeks by those clinics' own accounts, so count the crossings, and the CDC suggests checking the clinician's qualifications first.

Crossing for treatment

Getting Invisalign in Mexico: the visits, and what US health bodies advise

Aligners are not a single appointment. Invisalign: “Your doctor will also schedule a series of regular, face-to-face check-ups to give you each new batch of aligners and monitor the progress of your new smile.” (Invisalign)

  • How often the clinics say you come back. Dental del Rio: “Patients typically visit the clinic every 6-8 weeks” (Dental del Rio). “These appointments are essential for receiving new aligners and allowing the orthodontist to assess treatment progress.” (Dental del Rio) X Dentistry: “Orthodontic treatments (such as braces or Invisalign) need visits every 4 to 6 weeks, so they suit you if you live in California and can cross easily.” (our translation of “Los tratamientos de ortodoncia (como brackets o Invisalign) requieren visitas cada 4-6 semanas, así que son ideales si vives en California y puedes cruzar fácilmente.”, X Dentistry) New Age Dental: “During the first few months, it may be necessary to visit every two weeks” (New Age Dental).
  • The CDC. “Travelers may need to get health care in the United States if they develop complications after returning. Follow-up care for complications might be expensive.” (CDC) “Check the qualifications of the clinician who will be doing the procedure and the credentials of the facility where the procedure will be done.” (CDC)
  • The American Dental Association. “You should consider arranging follow-up care with a U.S. dentist prior to travel to ensure continuity of care upon your return.” (ADA) And: “saving money overseas may lead to greater expense to your health and your wallet when you arrive back home.” (ADA)
  • What the same treatment averages at home. In CareCredit's survey of US practices, clear aligners averaged $5,108 ($1,800 to $8,100). In the border states, by the same survey's state figures: California $5,399, Arizona $4,796, New Mexico $5,934 and Texas $3,967. Brands that sell aligners direct in the US, each with its price: the best clear aligners.

What Mexican law and the orthodontists' association say

The CDC's advice to check the clinician's qualifications has a Mexican answer: a registered title, and for orthodontists a certification. In each body's own words, with our translation:

  • The General Health Law, article 79, which names dentistry among the professions it covers: “the professional titles or specialist certificates must have been lawfully issued and registered by the competent education authorities.” (our translation of “se requiere que los títulos profesionales o certificados de especialización hayan sido legalmente expedidos y registrados por las autoridades educativas competentes.”, General Health Law)
  • The Mexican Association of Orthodontics. “The Mexican Association of Orthodontics (AMO) is the only association recognised to run certification and recertification in orthodontics, a recognition granted through the Directorate General of Professions of the Ministry of Public Education.” (our translation of “La Asociación Mexicana de Ortodoncia, Colegio de Ortodoncistas, A.C. (AMO) es la única asociación que tiene la idoneidad en los procesos de Certificación y Recertificación en Ortodoncia que fue otorgada a través de la Dirección General de Profesiones de la Secretaría de Educación Pública.”, AMO)
  • Aligners as medical devices. Article 376 of the same law requires sanitary registration for “medical devices, except those the health authority has determined to be low risk and not to need sanitary registration” (our translation of “los dispositivos médicos con excepción de aquellos determinados como de bajo riesgo y que no requieran registro sanitario por la autoridad sanitaria”, General Health Law)

Every brand's FDA reports and recalls are on the safety record.
